Protocol overheads are additive, not multiplicative. A 1000-byte payload with 20-byte IP header and 20-byte TCP header and 18-byte Ethernet overhead has total overhead of 58 bytes. Efficiency = 1000/(1000+58) ≈ 94.5%. For small packets, this overhead can dominate—a 64-byte minimum Ethernet frame carrying a 1-byte TCP ACK has efficiency under 2%!

The bandwidth-delay product (BDP) = Bandwidth × RTT represents the amount of data 'in flight' when the pipe is full. For high utilization with sliding window protocols, the window size must be ≥ BDP. A 1 Gbps link with 50ms RTT has BDP = 1×10⁹ × 0.05 = 6.25 MB. The sender needs a 6.25 MB window to keep this pipe full!
Sliding window protocols (Go-Back-N and Selective Repeat) overcome stop-and-wait's limitations by allowing multiple frames in flight simultaneously.
With window size W, the sender can transmit up to W frames before waiting for an ACK.
If W ≥ 1 + 2a: The sender never has to wait; utilization = 100%
If W < 1 + 2a: The sender exhausts the window before receiving ACKs.

When the channel has bit error rate P (probability a frame is corrupted), efficiency decreases because corrupted frames must be retransmitted.
For Go-Back-N with frame error probability P:

Selective Repeat is more efficient under error conditions because it doesn't retransmit correctly received frames.

Since W = 127 < 5001:
GBN: U = 127(1-0.01) / [5001(1-0.01+127×0.01)]
= 125.73 / [5001 × 2.26]
= 125.73 / 11302.26 ≈ **1.11%**
SR: U = 127(0.99) / 5001 = 125.73 / 5001 ≈ **2.51%**Neither protocol achieves good efficiency on this high-RTT link with the given window size. SR is 2.3x better than GBN because it doesn't waste bandwidth retransmitting correctly-received frames. The real solution is a larger window—TCP over satellite uses window scaling to achieve windows in the megabyte range.
A common interview question: 'What window size is needed for 100% utilization?' The answer is W ≥ 1 + 2a, or equivalently, Window Size (in bytes) ≥ Bandwidth × RTT + one frame. This directly relates to TCP window scaling—the 16-bit window field limits TCP to 64KB without scaling, which is insufficient for high-BDP paths.
Classic Ethernet using CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) has a theoretical efficiency limit based on the collision domain parameters.
The maximum efficiency of CSMA/CD under ideal conditions is:
